Charred Cedar Siding
Installation Guide
It is not difficult to create a perfect exterior for
your home with Charred Cedar Siding
A key installation detail to create durability and increased long term performance of your wall is the creation of a "rain screen". A rain screen is simply a wall designed with a ventilated space behind the siding. This allows the siding and other wall components to dry out quickly on the inside, avoiding mold and rot. To create this space you may install the siding over wood battens, or proprietary furring products.
See below for our recommended install illustrations for a rain screen install
of NW Shou Sugi Ban's siding products.

Simple Horizontal Siding Rainscreen Install
To create a horizontal siding installation simply install 2 x 1/2" pressure treated (or cedar) wood battens vertically at each stud line over the face of house wrap or other water barrier.
This will create a vertical ventilation channel between each batten, allowing the cedar to breathe.
Nail or screw (use stainless fasteners) siding at each batten.

Simple Vertical Siding Rainscreen Install
For vertical siding it is important to create vertical ventilation Chanels uninterrupted by battens. this requires vertical battens and horizontal as shown.
As with horizontal siding, nail or screw siding at each batten (use stainless fasteners).
